Time Management

Hoo boy. Time management.

This my friends, is the skill of champions. Unlike highschool, where you HAVE to go to school at 8 a.m. College usually (thought not always) has multiple offerings of the class you want and multiple times, making it easier to pick and choose when you want to go to class. In this day and age, very few young people are early risers or morning people, so if you really hate mornings its harder to get up and go to class. I do not advise taking 8 a.m. classes ESPECIALLY if you're a commuter. There is also the fact that now you are not "Advised" to go to bed earlier than 12 at night, meaning many young college kids stay up as late as they want, and those early classes are painful. So plan on the occasional late night regardless of how early you need be up.
For time management purposes I advise you make sure you have ample sleeping time and limit the late nighters.
Secondly, if you have a part time job while in college, you have to scoop out more time for that. Employers who hire college kids know that school is the primary focus you have and will usually work around your schedule. The biggest problem with have said part time job is that it carves time out of your schedule that you can use for homework or socializing.
So a typical schedule will be 1 morning class, lunch, 1 afternoon class, (with a couple more thrown in depending on class load), work is thrown in there somewhere, and you may have at least a couple hours of Homework every night (again depending on classes). If you have a job the remaining hours of your day might face a problem, hang out with friends, or do homework. I myself have a hard time resisting the urge to socialize. Socializing isn't bad, but it can be detrimental to a GPA.
Be careful with the balancing act of homework, work, and socializing. If you are not careful, sleep and health is the first thing to go to compensate. Lack of sleep and health is very detrimental to the GPA in the long run.

Now those were the vague, typical things that occur in a typical average college experience.
I shall now cover specifics like deadlines, Church, workouts, and anything else I can come up with on my way down the page.

First of all, dum dum dum Deadlines.
Deadlines are everywhere, College is real good about giving you so much time to work on a project, paper, speech, that you forget about it shortly after it was assigned, remembering at the last minute that its due tomorrow.  Murphy's Law (If it can go wrong it WILL go wrong), applies to deadlines like you wouldn't believe. If you wait till the last minute to write a paper, the computer will crash, or your friends will call you to go out.
Ideally you would do a little bit every day to spread the load, but lets face it, there's not many disciplined enough to do that. I like to get started on the project as soon as its assigned and get the groundwork laid, that way if I forget or procrastinate I don't spend any time panicking. Some people do wait until the last moment and stay up all night. It might work for you, but there are many that its really bad for their health to be stressing out all night without sleep. Even if it does work for you, I don't recommend it. Get a little done here and there that way when the inevitable invite comes you can say "yeah guys, just give me 20 minutes to finish this sucker up and I'll meet you there!"

Church is super important to me, I will always do my best to make time for Church and bible studies. I plan my homework around bible studies "Ok if I knock out half before, then I won't be up too late after". It is extremely important to carve out a time in the schedule for this because no longer are you going to Church on Wednesday nights because there's nothing else to do, or because your parents go. Now everything is up to you. Not to mention how this can cut into social life, you just have to decide what is important to you.

Workouts also take time, you either find it, or you gain the infamous Freshman 15 (although its gaining pounds itself.. like the Freshman 25 or 30) This one is a goal of mine to accomplish.

There is a story floating around on email forwards and such about how your life is a jar:
Big rocks are your God, family, work, school, health.
Medium rocks are responsibilities, chores, and friends
Small rocks are hobbies and pleasures
Sand is tv shows and other time consuming things you enjoy
+ coffee or beer depending on the version.

The point is to put in the big rocks first and the sand last, but there's still always time for a cup of coffee or a beer. I hope you choose coffee while underage ;)

Your schedule is the same thing. Put in the import stuff first and there will always be enough room for hobbies and socializing (and coffee!) Just remember if you put the small rocks and sand in first, you'll lose room for a big rock, and that will end in disaster.

Time Management is very important, and is a crucial life skill you will always use. But don't forget about the little things that will still fit in.
Go enjoy some coffee/tea/coke
